Researchers at Calabash Caye Field Station in Belize partnered with scientists at the University of Central Florida to study mangroves on Calabash Caye. The tags pictured here mark specific roots that the researchers monitor for sponge growth. The waters surrounding the mangroves have a greenish hue, but up close the sponges boast beautiful blues, purples, greens, yellows, and oranges. Jani, a marine biologist at the field station, blends in with the orange sponges as she snorkels with our group of National Geographic Student Expeditions (NGSE) students.
