VOR 2018 Newport

"The Volvo Ocean Race is often described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world, sailing’s toughest team challenge and one of the sport’s Big Three events, alongside the Olympics and America’s Cup." This 45,000 nautical mile, 9-month race around the world is a test of mental, physical, and emotional limits. During the 2017-18 Volvo Ocean Race (VOR), 12 cities around the world hosted stopovers, where an in-port race and other activities are held. The only stop in the United States was in Newport, Rhode Island. Spectators from the Ocean State didn't shy away from rain and stormy skies to cheer on the home team Vestas 11th Hour Racing. The beginning photos in this series show the in-port race (up through the celebratory champagne for Vestas 11th Hour Racing's podium finish) and the remainder are from the start of the 9th leg of the race the next day as the USA bids farewell to the fleet, heading across the Atlantic to Cardiff.
